Multifunctional calibrator ElMetro-Volta
Multifunctional calibrator ElMetro-Volta (hereinafter referred to as “calibrator” or “ElMetro-Volta”) is intended for high-precision measurement and reproduction of direct current and voltage as well as resistance and signals of thermo-electric converters – thermal couples (TC) and resistance temperature detectors (RTD).
Calibrators are applied both in the field and in laboratories as an operable and a reference measuring instrument for verification, calibration and adjustment of various measuring and measuring & computing complexes, normalizing and primary transducers as well as indicating and recording devices.

Calibrator provides the following operation modes:
- Measurement of direct current, voltage and active resistance signals;
- Reproduction (generation) of direct current, voltage and active resistance signals. Signals of direct current, voltage and resistance could be represented in specific forms: a triangle, meander and etc.;
- simultaneous generation and measurement of any parameter:
- Direct current;
- Voltage;
- Resistance.
Measurement and reproduction (generation) ranges and limits of permissible main error of a relevant calibrator function are listed in Table 1 below.

Additional error is not more than ± 0.001% UL/ºС for measurement and reproduction (generation) of current, voltage and resistance within temperature ranges (-10…+15) °С and (+35…+50) °С. UL is an upper limit of measurement and reproduction range.
Input resistance of channels should be:
- not more than 18 Ohm – for current measurement (under temperature +23 ºС);
- not more than 10 MOhm - for voltage measurement from 0 to 10 V;
- not more than 10 MOhm - for voltage measurement from 1 to 50 V.
Output resistance of channels should be:
- not less than 200 MOhm – for direct current generation;
- not more than 0.05 Ohm plus connecting wires resistance – for voltage generation.
Load resistance should be:
- not more than 260 Ohm for current generation within the range 5-20 mA;
- not more than 1040 Ohm for current generation within the range 0-5 мА;
- not less than 1 kOhm for voltage generation within the range 0-99.999 mV;
- not less than 5 kOhm for voltage generation within the range 0-999.99 mV;
- not less than 5 kOhm for voltage generation within the range 0-12 V.
Excitation current for resistance generation should be:
- not less than 0.05 мА and not more than 1.3 мА within the range 0-2000 Ohm;
- not less than 0.2 мА and not more than 4.5 мА within the range 0-400 Ohm.
Excitation current for resistance measurement: (0.4 ± 0.1) мА.
Calibrator is capable to measure and reproduce output signals of thermal couples with NSC according to GOST R 8.585-2001 / GOST 3044-94 with automatic or manual compensation of cold junction temperature at option. TC types, limits of permissible main error as well as ranges of TC output signals measurement and reproduction are listed in Table 2 below.

Limit of permissible error of cold junction temperature compensation is ±0.5°CCalibrator measures and reproduces output signals of resistance temperature detectors (TSP, TSM, TSN) with NSC according to GOST 6651-2009 and GOST 6651-94. Calibrator is powered by two rechargeable batteries of 1.2 V (NiCd, NiMH – АА type) or by power supply unit with corner adapter plugs into a single-phase network with 220 V AC voltage and 50 Hz frequency.
Information on battery discharge level is displayed in LCD. Calibrator batteries are charged automatically or according to a timer.
Duration of calibrator continuous operation with fully charged batteries (1000 mAh) is not less than:
- 2 h in 20 мА current generation mode without LCD backlight;
- 4 h in measurement mode with LCD backlight.
Calibrator is equipped with RS-232/USB (optional) – interface and service software for PC.
Calibrator is resistant to ambient temperatures from -10 to +50 °С.
Calibrator Ingress Protection Rating corresponds to IP54 according to GOST 14254.
Calibrator is resistant to vibrations of performance group N2 according to GOST R 52931.
Calibrator overall dimensions: 155 х 96 mm.
Calibrator weight – not more than 0.55 kg.
Mean time between failures – not less than 30000 h.
Average life-time – not less than 8 years.
Verification interval – 2 years. Verification could be carried out by the manufacturer or at Rostechregulation regional offices.

Circuit of calibrator external electric connections could be found in a manual instruction. In cable for resistance reproduction/measurement:
- short outputs: current;
- long outputs: voltage;
- red – ( + ); black – ( - ).
Calibrator operation time from fully charged new batteries is (1300 mAh):
- generation of 20 mA current, without backlight: 4 hours;
- generation of 20 mA current, with backlight “3”: 3 hours;
- voltage measurement mode, without backlight: 11 hours;
- voltage measurement mode, with backlight “3”: 7 hours.
Device description and working principle of multifunctional calibrator ElMetro-Volta
Calibrator is designed as a portable manual device (view Pic. 1. Structure of calibrator ElMetro-Volta) in plastic housing (1) with a keyboard (2) and LCD (3) located in the front side panel.
The front side panel includes pinholes and jacks for connecting calibrator to external facilities and instruments in electric signals measurement modes (4) and generation modes (5) as well as serial port for communication with PC (6), moreover, a jack for connecting 220 V AC power supply unit (7) with corner adapter is placed at the right side of calibrator. The front side panel also includes a power supply on/off button (8).
Batteries for autonomous operation are installed in the back side panel.
Calibrator consists of an interface module and data collection and processing module.
Electric signals measured by means of protective circuits, which prevent electronic circuit from overloads, get to input of multichannel ADC which converts measured electric signal into a digital code that is further processed by a microprocessor. Reference-voltage source (RVS) and temperature sensor, which is applied for thermal compensation of RVS and measurement circuits, provide high precision of measurement minimizing at the same time dependence of measurement error on ambient temperature.
Function of calibrator control, measurement data processing, data output into a display or input by a keyboard are executed by microprocessor of data collection and processing module in electronic unit.
Functional capabilities enable to input target values of a reproduced signal quicker and easier:
- bit-serial input;
- increase/decrease with a specified interval;
- shift from point to point in accordance to a specified script (up to 10 scripts);
- any combination of methods listed above.
Calibrator is equipped with a user-friendly script editing system.
Calibrator ensures reproduction of specific form signals such as meander and fixed triangle by setting UML and LML values as well as statistics period and signal interval.
Calibrator is provided with a built-in mathematical processing of measurement data: calculation of average value, root-mean-square deviation, maximum and minimum.
Calibrator provides a function of saving results (archiving) of several measurements:
- verification archive;
- measurement archive (up to 25 measurement series).
